Setup Outlook 2000 for Microsoft Exchange

NOTE: We do not recommend using Outlook 2000; instead you should use Outlook 2003 (if using Window 2000 or Windows XP) or Outlook 2002 (if using Windows ME or Windows 98). You do get a free copy & license for Outlook 2002 or Outlook 2003 as part of our service; please e-mail us to obtain the download link & keycode for Outlook 2002 or Outlook 2003.

Pre-requisites: before you can configure Outlook 2000, you will need the following:

  1. If you can, please upgrade to Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2002. Contact us for a free copy.
  2. Your Outlook setup information with your username, password, server name, etc. This can be found in either the the welcome setup e-mail or you can log into the Naples-Digital-Services Control Panel and click on "View Outlook Setup Info."
  3. A working connection to the Internet -- You will not be able to fully configure the software unless your system can connect to the mail server.
  4. Microsoft Outlook 2000 installed with the latest Service Packs & patches: Click here to check for updates. NOTE: Make sure that you have your original MS Office CD's before doing this!

Section A: Pre-configuration

  1. Test whether you need a VPN or not: Click here.
  2. Download and run the pre-setup software: Click on this link - http://www.Naples-Digital-Services.com/Downloads/OLSetup.exe and select "Open". Follow the prompts to finish the setup. If MS Outlook is open, you must close it down first.
  3. Launch Microsoft Outlook 2000. The setup is different if you have run Outlook 2000 before or not. Once you launch Outlook 2000, do you see a "Microsoft Outlook Setup Wizard"? If so, proceed to Section B. Otherwise, proceed to Section C.

Section B: When using Outlook 2000 for the first time

The first time you start Outlook, the Microsoft Outlook Setup Wizard will run and step you through the configuration process. If the Wizard does NOT run when you start Outlook, then Outlook has been run at least once before; - proceed to Section C for instructions.

  1. Make sure that you have run the Pre-Setup software (Section A).
  2. The first time you start Outlook, the Microsoft Outlook Setup Wizard will run and step you through the configuration process.
  3. Select the option Use the following information services.
  4. Check the box marked Microsoft Exchange Server and click Next.
  5. In the “Microsoft Exchange Server” window, enter the following information:
    a. Microsoft Exchange Server: ("Exchange Server" - from Prerequisites #2 above, e.g.: "MAIL006" or "BE001". Do not add ".mail.lan"! )
    b. Mailbox: enter your username (e.g. company.username)
    c. Click on Check Name
    NOTE: if you get this error message - "The name could not be resolved. The server containing the Global Address list is no longer available.", please click here to fix this.
    d. You will be prompted to logon with your username (e.g. company.username), password, and Domain, which is MAIL.
    e. Click “OK”
  6. If you are configuring Outlook on your own computer or laptop, you will be asked whether you travel with your computer. Answer Yes if you want to enable Outlook to work both while online and offline. Answer No is you will only use Outlook while online. To enable and configure offline use of Outlook, please read How do I configure Outlook so I can use it online and offline?
  7. Click Finish to start using Outlook.
  8. You're ready to use Outlook! Every time you start Outlook, you will be prompted to logon with your username, password, and domain. Use MAIL for the domain. The login process takes 15-30 seconds - please be patient.

Section C - Steps to Configure Outlook - if Outlook has been run before:

Manual setup of Outlook is necessary if you have previously ran Outlook, whether or not you created a profile and/or account.

  1. Make sure that you have run the Pre-Setup software (Section A).
  2. Launch Outlook 2000, click on Tools, then select Options.
  3. In the Options window, click on Mail Services or the Mail Delivery tab. Click on Reconfigure Mail Support at the bottom.
  4. On the “Email Service Options”, select “Corporate or Workgroup” and click on “Next”. If you are prompted with a message, click “Yes”.
  5. Close then re-open Outlook 2000.
  6. Select Tools -> Services -> “Add” and select “Microsoft Exchange Server”.
  7. In the “Microsoft Exchange Server” window, enter the following information:
    a. Microsoft Exchange Server: ("Exchange Server" - from Prerequisites #2 above, e.g.: "MAIL006" or "BE001". Do not add ".mail.lan"! )
    b. Mailbox: enter your username (e.g. company.username)
    c. Click on Check Name
    d. You will be prompted to logon with your username (e.g. company.username), password, and Domain, which is MAIL.
    e. Click “OK”
  8. Close Outlook.
  9. Log off and then log back again.
  10. Ensure that Outlook is closed. Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel and click on Mail.
  11. Click on the “Delivery” tab.
  12. In the box “Deliver new mail to the following location”, choose “Mailbox – Your Name”.
  13. Click OK, and close the Control Panel.
  14. You're ready to use Outlook! Every time you start Outlook, you will be prompted to logon with your username, password, and domain. Use MAIL for the domain. The login process takes 15-30 seconds - please be patient.
